Axolotl Fun Facts!

They are carnivorous!

They will eat anything that moves and fits in their mouths! common foods include: small fish, worms, large insects, mollusks(snails and slugs), crustaceans, and, most horrifying of all... OTHER AXOLOTLS!

They can be cannibalistic!

This is mainly something most common in young axolotls, and technically, they only swim by, snack on another family member's limb, and then run(swim, I guess) away. However, this is not as bad as it seems, because of this next fun fact..

They can regenerate lost limbs!

though most amphibians do have superhuman healing abilities, these little guys take it up a notch by being able to regenerate jaws, limbs, spinal cords, skin, and even parts of their little hearts and brains! how did scientists find out they could regrow chunks of their brains? I don't know, but I can imagine it probably didn't go well for the poor axolotls...

They come in a variety of colours!

If you want to find out about all the color varieties, click this link! And this is my favorite species of them all! It's called the 'chimera axolotl' and it's adorable!

They are all babies!

Axolotls are neotenic creatures, which means that they never grow into their adult form but still reach sexual maturity. This means that although almost all amphibians develop lungs to live on land, these little guys keep their gills. It also means that they never develop their teeth and use suction to catch and eat their prey. The interesting part, however, is that scientists got them to metamorphose into adults by putting them under special conditions and exposing them to certain substances and foods.

This is a fully metamorphosed axolotl.
